New Mexico is a beautiful and largely rural state with many smaller communities. A particular challenge in these areas and across rural America is access to healthcare providers. Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS) is facing this challenge across the state at many of its clinics and medical offices. PMS believes that a contributing factor to the issue is a short supply of adequate housing. To help address this, PMS is working with SCOUT to develop prototype housing for doctors and medical staff at their clinic location in Cuba, NM.
The approach suggested by SCOUT involves four units arranged around a central courtyard for easy access. The design takes into account the need to be close to the clinic while also ensuring enough distance for staff to maintain a good work-life balance.
The design of the units and site aims to create a balance between privacy and community by including outdoor communal spaces as well as private yards. The development is laid out to maximize views of the Jemez mountains to the east and the rolling desert to the west while also minimizing their impact on the environment.
The design includes three 1 bedroom units with a lofted office and one 2 bedroom single story fully accessible unit, all of which come with covered parking and open, efficient floor plans. To keep construction costs manageable, we chose common and simple materials and equipment that would be readily available, given the rural location. PMS is one of the largest healthcare providers in the state, directly serving more rural communities than any other healthcare organization. If this integrated housing model succeeds, PMS may consider extending it to other their remote locations in New Mexico.
